I too just installed the 386 Gutsy Desktop Version. It only recognized 3GB of my 4GB. So I recompiled the Kernel with CONFIG_HIGHMEM64G=y and that kernel does recognize 4GB on my machine. It appears that CONFIG_HIGHMEM4G really doesn't mean 4GB after all.
