The Beta was announced by then president of Sony World Studios Phil Harrison in 2007. Back then, Harrison stated that a more publicly accessible beta trial would open in April of 2007; the full service would launch in "Fall 2007".
Since then its slipped twice, finally with the head of Sony Computer Entertainment Kaz Hirai stating effectively that it would be out when it was ready.
