And he's going to be saved by someone, one day.

But he isn't going to meet it.

Ikari: The pilot of Unit 01.

Shinji: I've met her once or twice - this is her third time meeting me.

Ikari: The three of us started piloting Unit 01 together.

Shinji: I'll meet you again, Ikari-san.

So the new Shinji has no real memories of her and her role in the world of Unit 01. And the reason is because she lost her mother.

The reason Shinji gets drawn to her is because he wants Shinji to have her as a member of himself or as an Angel.

Shinji: It's because I'm attracted to her.
