For this prototype I had a dedicated sensor strip for each control. Each group of 8 sensors share a common circuit, from there their signals get muxed into a single circuit for noise rejection (the key feature that makes this thing work well).

After I built this I figured out a way to make a full-on touchscreen-type surface, multitouch, and still with excellent noise rejection.
