Hi everyone. I have old roller shades in my living room. They still work but I want to make them automatic. I don’t want to buy completely new shades because it’s expensive. Is there any easy way to add a motor to existing roller blinds? Something simple that I can install myself without drilling big holes? I saw some kits online but I’m not sure which one is good for beginners. Thanks for any advice!

Hello! Yes, there are good retrofit solutions now. I recently added motors to my old shades and it was really easy. You should look at upgrading automation systems here: https://www.progressiveautomations.com/en-eu/collections/retrofit. This company has a kit called Revolve Smart Roller Shade Retrofit Kit. It comes with motor, brackets, solar panel, remote and different adapters. Installation took me about 20 minutes per shade. No complicated wiring. After that I connected it to Google Home and now I control everything with my voice or phone. Very happy with the result. Price is reasonable compared to new motorized blinds. Try it!

I also looked at retrofit options last month. The solar panel part is really useful because you don’t need to change batteries often. My only advice – check the diameter of your roller tube before buying. Some kits only fit certain sizes. Otherwise it works well even on quite old blinds.
