The idea behind the hyperion multi-booter program is that it is a tsr program that allows someone to have both the Ti-Os and Pedrom or any other operating system that comes along in the future.

It uses the same basic system and features as the GNU Grub Multi-booter for Redhat Linux / Fedora Core (1, 2, 3, 4)

Some of the projected features will include

-A GUI for OS choosing
-An optional password protection
-Up to 3 Operating Systems at one time installed (if memory permits)
-And much more...

I need to know if anyone would be interested in this program...

Before knowing if such a program would be useful...
Is it really something that can be done ?
(for instance, a TSR needs AMS - or any other OS - to work... It can work _before_ the OS is launched, I think)

BTW, I'm wondering if ExtendeD did not create something to use PedRom on a calculator without deleting AMS...
Hu, I can find it on ticalc... maybe I'm wrong, actually

Well the "hack" done by ExtendeD (if I remember well it's ExtendeD, else, I'm sorry for the real developper) that leads to PedRhum is enough for me, but why not, that may by fun, but I will not say that it may be usefull (as PedRom has just one point good : the amout of free mem... if two OS are installed, PedRom has no interest, on my opinion)

Raziel> Hi, this looks interesting, but you didn't mention how you handled the most important points (password protection and GUI are, imho, secondary) : would you have to reset the whole RAM to switch operating systems? How does it compare to Pedrhum?

Well, currently it's sort of a chicken-and-egg problem: nobody wants to develop on pedrom, because few people have it, because you have to sacrifice the math functions. If you could get AMS and Pedrom to smoothly cooperate (e.g. be able to use the AMS CAS in Pedrom -- though that would be a HUGE undertaking, due to the ton of internal variables that AMS uses), then people might be more interested in Pedrom development, and in return bring unique features to Pedrom. Although I must admit that apart from extra RAM and the ability to run from Flash (although this can be worked around if you are willing to take the risk of unprotecting the flash, or simply to have your app signed), I can't think of anything that Pedrom could do that AMS can't... Maybe extra speed [e.g. faster heap management], or stuff like reentrancy? But it's true that at the moment, there's nothing compelling apart from extra ROM/RAM sad

Heu... rassurez moi grin :

Déjà on va

By the way, WHY clone a grub like shell ? It's surely a good thing for PC like system (even if only x86 PC can use it) but for handheld system like the TI's one, it's (for me) not a good thing. No one need a shell bootloader, It will be too large for the purpose. A simple one which can just allow to select the OS is enought (and GRUB is not a redhat only feature by the way)

Yes, but only for pedrom. Make an universal bootloader won't be a bad idea

Well, there is a single usable third-party OS (PedroM), although the current version has annoying bugs such as that of strncpy. Therefore, an universal bootloader is quite pointless for the time being.
Not to mention that it takes space per se, especially if OS makers decide that it should be up to the bootloader to try to make their OSs compatible with standard AMS (Pedrhum's modifications to PedroM are not trivial pieces of code) - if they want to, obviously.

The only problem of PedRhum is that (if I remember well) it is built based on a deprecated version of PedRom, no ?
avatar

29

Yes... And since pedrom isn't easily relocatable, making a pedrhum version of is a lot of work..
