Branché sur une CT60 et à un écran, ça donne quoi ? Ca me rappel de l'Evolution d'OxO System, une belle carte mère, mais aucune fonctionnelle...

Ca avance:"Success! After three long weeks implementing the CT60-to-DDR bridge we now have verified 060 longword write and read accesses to and from the DDR memory! We still have some small fixes to do to make all byte, word and move16 accesses work also, but that is a very minor job compared to what has already been done. The accesses are also a bit slow yet, because of the asynchronous bridges we've had to implement and the mandatory precharge operation that the Xilinx generated DDR controller performs after each read or write operation. We'll speed this up by adding a cache on the ddr controller in the future, which will cancel most of the cycles wasted by the Xilinx controller precharging. Tomorrow you'll get some memory performance numbers, but keep in mind that these are very preliminary and doesn't in any way reflect the final performance of the DDR memory."

Ca avance :"Time for an update again! We promised some speed numbers two months ago(!) but we must have forgotten about that... Sorry.

Since last time we have focused on getting a working video pipeline, so we could display a picture from DDR memory. Until then we really didn't have a graphics card, but now we do! These two months have been spent on connecting our old working video pipeline to the CT60+DDR structure mentioned earlier. So far we have only tested the 32-bit pixel mode in 640x480x60Hz, and it seems to work fine. The reason this has taken so long is that we had lots of minor bugs, and it's only during weekends we've been able to concentrate our efforts. Without the oscilloscope from Henrik's job these problems would have taken forever...

The whole thing is far from Videl compatible yet, but at least now we have something to play with at the Outline party.

By the way, now we run the DDR memory constantly at 210MHz (DDR420) and it works fine all the time... "

Et une autre information:'This week we have each worked on a separate area. Henrik inserted another I2C controller into the design to communicate with the DVI chip. It seems to work fine. Feeding the monitor with a DVI screen will be a common job for us both later. Torbjörn focused on defining our own SuperVidel registers for setting screen address and other stuff. These regs were hardcoded in the VHDL code until now. The registers have not yet been implemented, but it shouldn't be too much work. Later on we want to include a small soft CPU (maybe PicoBlaze) in the FPGA, to automatically control the two I2C units when new DVI or Clock settings have been written to the mentioned registers. The PicoBlaze should then take the register settings and output them to the right chip. When that is done, it will be much easier to change resolutions and clock rates, since we don't have to control the I2C controllers from our 060 code.

We have also resumed looking at the remaining EtherNats, which need quite some manual labour before shipping. "

We came home from Outline 2009 late on sunday evening. It was a great party as usual, and it was great to meet everybody again.
This party was also quite productive for us, since we managed to make the VDI and AES output the desktop to the SuperVidel! Big thanks to Pep (Peter Persson) for all the help with tricking the VDI. We also added support for double pixel width (for 320 pixels wide resolutions) and line doubling (for 240 lines resolutions). This will be useful when patching some games and stuff, to use the higher bandwidth to the graphics RAM."

"Le moins cher possible" ne serait pas suffisant ? Parce que bon genre proposer 100€, 500€ ou 1000€ c'est un peu débile. Imagine si tu vas à l'hyper du coin et à l'entrée on te demande quel prix tu serais près à mettre dans tes pâtes ? Pourquoi pas 10€ le kilo, tiens...

Quel est le meilleur choix performance/prix ?

Ben d'un côté, tu as un supervidel rétro-compatible avec le videl du Falcon. D'un autre, tu as une carte graphique PCI, qui ne sera en aucun cas compatible avec le videl... Ça dépend surtout de ce que tu comptes en faire.

Au fait, les projets CTPCI et SuperVidel ont quel âge, respectivement ? On parle pas d'ACP, évidement :P Non parce que sérieusement, sur la CTPCI il 'suffit' de terminer le driver (basé sur des fragments open-source) pour bénéficier de la toute puissance de la carte ATI, tandis que que le SuperVidel, il faut d'un coté développer le firmware VHDL (et choisir quels effets intégrer) et le pendant software sous forme de driver. Donc d'ici à ce que le 'bundle' SuperVidel soit près, vu le retard hardware déjà pris, ça peut encore trainer longtemps ! Ca me rappelle un peu l'histoire du Falcon040, "super mieux, super compatible, etc..." mais il en est où ?

A vrai dire, c'est pour le graphisme, la video, les demos et les jeux. Les cartes Ati proposees ne sont-elles pas un peu 'vieillotes' ?

Certes ce n'est pas des nVidia 9800 GT ou des ATI HD4580, mais vu les débits mémoire de la CT60 et la puissance du processeur, ça serait complètement inutile. Les ATI 7000 /9250 travaillent sur des PC avec un CPU au minimum à 300 MHz, ce que la CT60 ne fait pas et sera de fait le facteur limitant... Regarde ce que la 9250 propose et essaye de savoir si le SuperVidel offrira 'demain' autant de fonctionnalités, et si elles seront exploitables :

Même si dans les benchs la 9250 est bonne dernière (par rapport à des mastodontes) elle reste laaaaaargement plus puissante que le Videl de base et sera exploitable dès que la CTPCI sera finie, le firmware de la 9250 n'étant pas à faire. Le SuperVidel demande du hard, du firmware et du driver (en-dehors de la compatibilité Videl de base qui n'offrira rien de plus que ce que le Videl propose déjà, c'est à dire rien).

Et même une fois que le développement sera fait, ça m'étonnerait qu'ils arrivent à égaler les performances d'une carte graphique, même ancienne, avec la technologie présente sur le SuperVidel. Le nombre de transistors dans un GPU de carte graphique est assez monstrueux...

Pour ainsi dire en phase de production et ceci en plus:
"1) What wasn't in Evil's video here was the boot-screen, which should give you a good picture of how compatible it is. Today we can run demos and exit them, and get back the an enhanced desktop resolution. This works as long as the demo/game saves and restores the Videl registers directly, which most do. As we've said earlier we have working VGA resolutions (except 2-bit mode, since it uses another way of "counting" and ST modes). RGB is left to do. But that will most probably be fixed in a future firmware update, so we can focus on producing this thing.

2) Henrik will design a small ethernet board (about 3x5 cm, 1.2" x 2") when he gets off work in about 2 weeks. Then I'll have to include an open source MAC controller in the FPGA. The board will be very low cost since it uses only a PHY chip and RJ45 connector (plus other small necessary components of course). The EtherNat had a full MAC+PHY controller, which was 10x times as expensive.

Henrik came up with a clever name for the new board: SVethLANa haha
It stands for SuperVidel ethernet LAN adapter... :P
