Ce type d'avion est équipé d'une porte de sortie de secours arrière, utilisée principalement par les compagnies aériennes internationales, et dispose d'une configuration de siège qui permet d'accueillir plus de passagers dans l'avion. La plupart des avions de ligne américains n'utilisent pas cette configuration et conçoivent la zone pour qu'elle apparaisse comme une fenêtre de l'intérieur de l'avion.
Ce qui est inquiétant est que les MAX-9 d'Alaska Airlines sont censés avoir cette issue condamnée de manière permanente à cause de la configuration cabine en basse densité. (La 7 qui est partie lors de l'incident, et la 8 du coté opposé).
