Well, I never had a Commodore 64 back in the 80's and so I really don't know what classic retro games to look out for. The same goes the PC Engine - I'd never even heard of it until I saw the GP32 had an emulator for it. I'd really appreciate any recomendations for ultimate retro games on these platforms.

Is it worth coming up with a list of game categories and listing the best games for each retro platform in each category ?

I don't know the C64, but I know very well the PC Engine.
