Germany’s “whistleblower protection law” came into force in July with the stated purpose of protecting people who report on workplace abuses. All companies with more than 49 members of staff must set up an office where staff can anonymously report on suspected abuses of the law without fear of retribution.

But according to Mr Knabe, who ran the Hohenschönhausen Memorial on the site of the Stasi’s political prison in Berlin for close to two decades, the law is more far-reaching than simple whistleblower protection.

“The tip-off points won’t only pursue suspicions of criminality, they will also deal with misdemeanours subject to fines,” he wrote in an article for Germany’s Die Welt newspaper this week. “They will even be responsible for statements by officials that ‘constitute a violation of the obligation of loyalty to the constitution’.”

Warning that “it is just a small step from tip-off to denunciation”, Mr Knabe pointed to the example of Nazi Germany, where Germans fervently snitched on their neighbours often “for personal advantage or for revenge”.

In the worst-case scenario, these tip-off points will lead to “an atmosphere of fear similar to those seen in dictatorships”, he said.

Bamboo straws fared only slightly better than paper ones, with PFAS found in 80% of brands tested. The chemicals were found in 75% of plastic straws and 40% of glass brands. PFAS were not detected in any of the steel straws tested.

Our hypothesis was that straws made of paper were more likely to be contaminated with PFAS than other types of straws, as manufacturers aim to make the paper water-repellent. Following this hypothesis, we expected that there would be virtually no PFAS present in straws made of stain-less steel or glass.

Some glass straws are made of borosilicate glass so the presence of PFAS in these straws might be due to adsorption to silica minerals (Du et al.2014). However, since we have no information regarding the type of glass for each of the brands, further examination of how glass can be contaminated with PFAS is required.

Fraudsters have robbed Europe’s largest copper producer of €185 million ($198 million) worth of the metal, possibly with the help of insiders, the company said Tuesday.

After carrying out an extraordinary inventory on August 31, Germany’s Aurubis found that it had paid inflated invoices for shipments of scrap metal and other inputs, based on samples that had been manipulated to show a much higher copper content than turned out to be the case.

The inventory had established the scale of thefts the company disclosed on August 31 and in June, an Aurubis spokesperson told CNN. The losses forced Aurubis to slash its pretax profit forecast for the current fiscal year by about €170 million ($182 million).

Et au besoin, je le rappelle, peu importe le combat, si ta méthode c'est de t'attaquer en priorité à des cibles civiles et à commettre toutes les exactions possibles sur elles alors tu ne mérites aucun soutien vu que tu es un barbare terroriste. Quelque soit le "contexte", y'a aucun cas où c'est excusable.

Et dans le cas présent ça ne veut pas dire pour autant qu'on renie ce qu'il se passe depuis des années dans l'autre camp.
